Complete time-lapse video of the Sun, spanning the entire months of September, October and November 2011 as seen through the SWAP ultraviolet instrument onboard the European Space Agency spacecraft Proba-2.
This is GK Persei, also known as the Firework Nebula. The star was part of a binary system which consisted of a white dwarf star and cool giant star in a compact orbit. The build up of mass of the white dwarf from the cool giant ultimately ends in a thermonuclear outburst which results in material being ejected from the star without destroying the white dwarf itself.
An outburst such as this occurred in 1901. A Series of photographs have been taken over the course of the last 17 years and a time lapse which depicts the motion of the expelled material can be created.
